Frequently asked
What is Otium?
Otium is a consumer attention app for iOS and Android. You choose the apps you want to spend less time on, set the limits and blocks that suit you, and Otium helps you stay within them. A simple visual record shows how your time on those apps has trended over recent weeks.
Is Otium a parental-control or device-management tool?
No. Otium is for individual consumers who want to limit their own use of distracting apps. It does not have parental, family, MDM, or enterprise modes.
Which iOS and Android versions are supported?
iOS 16 or later on iPhone and iPad. The Family Controls / Screen Time API that Otium relies on is only available from iOS 16. iPadOS 16+ works the same way.
Android 8.0 (API 26) or later on phones and tablets. We do not currently support Android Go editions or devices without Google Play services.
How does the blocking work on iOS?
On iOS 16+, Otium uses Apple's Family Controls / Screen Time API. You pick the apps to block via Apple's native picker; iOS itself enforces the block during a session. Otium never sees the names or icons of the apps you select — Apple gives us only opaque ApplicationTokens.
How does the blocking work on Android?
On Android 8.0+, Otium uses the system Usage Access permission to detect when you open a blocked app and shows a shield. You will be guided to grant Usage Access during onboarding. Some Android OEMs (Samsung, Xiaomi, Oppo, OnePlus) aggressively kill background services; onboarding includes a per-OEM step to keep Otium running.
I can't get past the iOS / Android permission step.
On iOS, make sure Screen Time is enabled in Settings → Screen Time. If you see "Failed to authorize", restart the app and try again — Apple's API occasionally needs a second try. On Android, Usage Access is granted under Settings → Apps → Special access → Usage data access.
If you are still stuck, email support@getotiumapp.com with your phone model and OS version.
Is there a streak I can lose?
No. Otium has no streak counter and no "good day / bad day" classification. A heavy day is just a heavier-coloured cell on your record; nothing resets, and there is no number to mourn.
How do I cancel my subscription or get a refund?
Subscriptions are managed by Apple (App Store) or Google (Play Store), not by Otium directly.
- iOS: Settings → [your name] → Subscriptions → Otium → Cancel.
- Android: Play Store → Profile → Payments & subscriptions → Subscriptions → Otium.
For refunds, request directly with Apple (reportaproblem.apple.com) or Google. Email support@getotiumapp.com and we'll push the refund through with the store on your behalf.
Your statutory consumer rights — including the EU/UK 14-day digital-content withdrawal right where it applies — are described in section 5 of our Terms of Service.
I reinstalled / switched devices — how do I restore my purchase?
Open Otium and go to Settings → Subscription → Restore Purchases. The same flow restores both the monthly subscription and the lifetime plan. As long as you are signed in to the same Apple ID (iOS) or Google account (Android) you originally purchased with, your access will reactivate within a few seconds.
If the restore does not find your purchase: confirm you are using the original store account, then try again. If it still fails, email support@getotiumapp.com with the email on your store account and we will look it up in RevenueCat.
I switched iPhones — why is my app selection gone?
This is an Apple constraint, not a bug. The way iOS represents the apps you've selected is tied to the specific device, so the selection cannot be backed up or transferred to a new iPhone. After migrating, you'll be asked to choose your apps again on first launch. Your record of recent time on those apps is rebuilt automatically once you grant authorization on the new device.
The block stopped working — what now?
The most common cause: the system permission was turned off. Both iOS and Android let you revoke Otium's blocking permission in Settings, and when that happens the block silently stops.
- iOS: open Settings → Screen Time and look for Otium in the list of apps with Screen Time access. If it's missing or shows as off, open Otium and grant authorization again when prompted. (On iOS 26.4 and later, you may need to enter your Screen Time passcode to make this change — see the FAQ below.)
- Android: open Settings → Apps → Special access → Usage data access (label varies on Samsung One UI and Xiaomi MIUI — search "Usage" in Settings if you can't find it) and confirm Otium is on. If you also enabled Accessibility, check it under Settings → Accessibility.
If permissions look correct but the block still doesn't fire, the cause is usually OEM battery optimization (Samsung, Xiaomi, Oppo, OnePlus, Huawei). Otium has a per-OEM guide in Settings → Troubleshooting.
iOS asked me for a Screen Time passcode I don't have.
On iOS 26.4 and later, Apple gates changes to apps with Screen Time access behind your Screen Time passcode. This is Apple's behaviour, not Otium's.
If you set a Screen Time passcode in the past and have forgotten it: open Settings → Screen Time → Lock Screen Time Settings → Forgot Passcode on iOS, and follow the Apple-ID-based recovery flow. Apple's recovery guide has the full walk-through. We can't reset this for you — only Apple can.
If you've never set one: tapping "Allow" on the system prompt should be enough. The passcode prompt only appears if one is already configured on the device.
Will Otium ever sell or share my data?
No. We do not sell, share, or rent any user data. See the privacy policy for what we collect (very little) and why.
How do I delete my data?
Most of Otium's data lives on your device. Use Settings → Reset Otium in the app, or uninstall the app to remove it.
To also delete the small amount of analytics or crash data we hold off-device, email privacy@getotiumapp.com with your anonymous install ID — a 36-character UUID shown in Settings → About in the app. We respond to deletion requests within 30 days, in line with GDPR Art. 12(3).
If you have already uninstalled and don't have the install ID, email us anyway with the email address on your Apple ID or Google account. We can locate your subscription record and delete the small amount of data tied to it.
